Introduction
Ever since Carl von Carlowitz first used the term sustainability in connection with forestry in 1713, the topic has become increasingly topical and, since the first report of the Club of Rome “The Limits to Growth”, also increasingly explosive. In view of the major current challenges, which are being widely publicised, particularly in the form of multiple crises, there is a need for action if we want to leave future generations a planet that is as liveable as possible. In 2015, the international community of 193 UN member states set out a political framework for a fair and sustainable world with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In Europe, we agreed on a programme at the end of 2019 with the EU Green Deal, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Ambitious, but according to science, entirely feasible if we adapt the way we live and do business to the planetary boundaries. In addition, the circular economy, shortage of skilled labour, loss of biodiversity, energy supply and resource consumption play an important role in shaping our future.
